It took its name from the Escambia River,<br \/>\nitself a name of Muskogean origin. Pensacola, already a Spanish and later British colonial port,<br \/>\nbecame the county seat.<\/p>\n<p>Naval Air Station Pensacola opened in 1914 on the site of an earlier Navy yard and trained<br \/>\nastronauts John Glenn and Neil Armstrong before either flew in space.
