Teton County is a county in Wyoming, United States, about 260 miles northwest of Cheyenne and
\n90 miles north of Idaho Falls, Idaho. It had a population of 23,331 at the 2020 census, an
\nestimated 23,333 by 2025, and covers 3,995 square miles (10,350 km2) of land centred near
\n43\u00b055\u2032N 110\u00b034\u2032W.<\/p>\n

Jackson is the county seat and the county’s only incorporated town; its postal code is 83001.

Kelly sits on the site of Grovont, its own original name — the settlement formed in the
\nlate 1890s as Grovont and was renamed Kelly in 1909 to avoid confusion with a similarly named
\nplace nearby, so the two names refer to one community, not two. Hoback Junction is the highway
\ncrossroads at the south end of the Hoback CDP, not a separate census place. Colter Bay Village
\nand Beaver Creek both sit inside Grand Teton National Park near Moose; West Thumb is on
\nYellowstone Lake’s western arm, inside the sliver of Yellowstone National Park that falls in
\nTeton County rather than neighboring Park County.<\/p>\n

Geography<\/h2>\n

Teton County occupies Wyoming’s northwest corner, straddling the Teton Range and the
\nJackson Hole valley along the upper Snake River. The county holds all of Grand Teton National
\nPark and 40.4 percent of Yellowstone National Park’s total area, including about 96.6
\npercent of Yellowstone Lake’s water surface. Grand Teton itself, the range’s highest
\nsummit, rises to 13,775 feet (4,199 m) inside the county. Of the county’s 4,216 square
\nmiles, 3,995 are land and 221 are water — 5.2 percent, unusually high for Wyoming, thanks
\nto Jackson Lake, Yellowstone Lake and the Snake River system.<\/p>\n

Park County borders Teton County to the northeast, Fremont County to the east, Sublette
\nCounty to the southeast, and Lincoln County to the south. Idaho’s Teton County lies
\ndirectly across the range to the southwest, with Bonneville County and Fremont County, Idaho
\nalso touching the county’s western edge, and Gallatin County, Montana meets its

Demographics<\/h2>\n

Teton County had a population of 23,331 at the 2020 census, and the latest estimate puts the
\ncounty near 23,333 residents. Jackson and Wilson are the two largest communities, together
\nholding well over half the county’s population. Median household income runs $124,172
\n(2024 ACS estimate), far above Wyoming’s statewide figure of $72,415 (2023 ACS) —
\nTeton County has posted the highest per-capita income of any US county in recent Bureau of
\nEconomic Analysis rankings. Population density works out to roughly 5.8 people per square mile
\nof land, among the lowest in the lower 48 for a county this wealthy, reflecting how much of its
\narea sits inside the two national parks.<\/p>\n

Economy & Local Life<\/h2>\n

Retail trade employs the most county residents, about 2,257 workers, followed closely by
\naccommodation and food services at 2,252 and construction at 1,893, out of roughly 15,075
\nemployed residents total. Jackson Hole Mountain Resort at Teton Village anchors the winter
\neconomy, alongside Snow King Mountain and Grand Targhee ski areas nearby. The Jackson Hole
\nAirport, inside Grand Teton National Park, is the only commercial airport located within a
\nnational park in the country and the busiest in Wyoming. Since 1978 the Federal Reserve Bank of
\nKansas City has hosted its annual Jackson Hole Economic Policy Symposium here each August,
\ndrawing central bankers from around the world. Grand Teton and Yellowstone together bring
\nmillions of visitors through the county each year — Grand Teton alone logged 3.8 million
\nvisits in 2025.<\/p>\n

History<\/h2>\n

Wyoming’s legislature created Teton County on 15 February 1921, carving it out of
\nLincoln County; the county organized in 1922. Lawmakers made the exception because residents
\nlived too far from Kemmerer, the Lincoln County seat, to be served by it. The Teton Range that
\ngives the county its name was named by French-Canadian trappers, who called the three highest
\npeaks les trois tétons.<\/p>\n

On 23 June 1925, roughly 50 million cubic yards of rock and soil broke off Sheep Mountain and
\nslid across the Gros Ventre River, damming it and forming Lower Slide Lake. Almost two years
\nlater, on 18 May 1927, part of that unstable dam gave way. The resulting flood ran six feet deep
\nfor at least 25 miles downstream and destroyed the small settlement of Kelly, killing six
\npeople.<\/p>\n

Getting There<\/h2>\n

No interstate highway crosses Teton County. US Routes 26, 89, 191 and 287 converge on Jackson,
\nwith US 89\/191\/287 continuing north through Moran to Yellowstone’s South Entrance, and
\nWyoming Highway 22 crossing Teton Pass west toward Idaho.<\/p>\n
