Winnebago County is a county in Wisconsin, United States, on the western shore of Lake Winnebago in the state’s Fox Valley region. It had a population of 171,730 at the 2020 census and covers 579 square miles (1,500 km2), of which 434 square miles are land and 144 square miles are water, centred near 44\u00b004\u2032N 88\u00b038\u2032W.<\/p>\n

Oshkosh is the county seat, and its postal code is 54901. The county holds four cities (Oshkosh, Neenah, Menasha and Omro), two villages (Fox Crossing and Winneconne), several census-designated places, and dozens of small unincorporated lakeshore communities spread across its 15 towns. It sits in the Central time zone and carries FIPS code 55139.<\/p>\n

Menasha straddles the Winnebago–Calumet county line; the figures above are for the city as a whole, with most of its population and city hall on the Winnebago County side. Appleton, the Fox Valley’s largest city, has a small sliver of its southern edge inside Winnebago County, but the city itself is seated in and counted under Outagamie County, so it is not listed as a Winnebago County place here. Many of the “Beach” and “Point” names above are informal lake-cottage subdivisions on Lake Winnebago, Lake Butte des Morts or Lake Poygan that never grew into platted communities with a clear township assignment on record.<\/p>\n
