Laporte, on the Cache la Poudre River, served as the first<br \/>\ncounty seat. An 1862 Army post, Camp Collins, was built nearby; a flood in June 1864 destroyed<br \/>\nthe camp, and its garrison relocated to a new site that grew into the city of Fort Collins, which<br \/>\ntook over as county seat. Before European settlement, Ute people occupied the mountainous west<br \/>\nof the county while Cheyenne and Arapaho bands used the plains to the east.
