Lake County is a county in Colorado, United States, set high in the Rocky Mountains around the headwaters of the Arkansas River and home to Mount Elbert, the highest natural point in Colorado and in the entire Rocky Mountains. It had a population of 7,436 at the 2020 census and covers 384 square miles (990 km2) centred near 39\u00b011\u2032N 106\u00b022\u2032W.<\/p>\n

Leadville is the county seat, the only incorporated city, and sits at 10,152 feet, making it the highest incorporated city in the United States; its postal code is 80461. The county also holds two census-designated places and several unincorporated former mining camps. Lake County observes Mountain Time (UTC−7, UTC−6 during daylight saving) and carries FIPS code 08065.<\/p>\n

Malta, Stringtown, Birdseye, Everett, Balltown, Kobe, Resurrection Mill and Leadville Junction are all old mining-camp and rail-siding names from Lake County’s silver-boom era, clustered within a few miles of Leadville itself; several survive today only as a handful of cabins or a road name rather than a town centre.<\/p>\n
