The Banister River crosses the county on its way to the Dan River, and the county’s southeastern corner touches the John H. Kerr Reservoir (Buggs Island Lake), formed by damming the Roanoke River. Halifax County borders Campbell County to the northwest, Charlotte County to the northeast, Mecklenburg County to the east, Granville County, North Carolina to the southeast, Person County, North Carolina to the south, Caswell County, North Carolina to the southwest, and Pittsylvania County to the west.

Demographics

Halifax County had 34,022 residents at the 2020 census, giving it a population density of roughly 42 people per square mile of land — among the more sparsely settled counties in Southside Virginia. South Boston is the largest incorporated place, followed by the county seat, Halifax. Household income in the county runs well below the Virginia median of $89,931; Halifax County has historically been one of the state’s lower-income rural counties as its tobacco and textile economy contracted.

Economy & Local Life

Agriculture — tobacco, cattle and timber — and manufacturing have long anchored the county’s economy; South Boston was a major textile-mill town for much of the 20th century before the industry declined. Recreation around the John H. Kerr Reservoir draws boaters and anglers from across the region. South Boston Speedway, a NASCAR-sanctioned short track on U.S. Route 501, is the county’s best-known institution and hosts regular weekend racing through the season.

History

Halifax County was formed in 1752 from Lunenburg County, one of a wave of Virginia counties carved out as settlement pushed south and west along the fall line. It was named for George Montagu-Dunk, 2nd Earl of Halifax, a British colonial administrator of the period. South Boston, now the county’s largest town, was an independent city from 1960 until 1995, when Virginia’s state government allowed it to revert to town status and rejoin Halifax County — a reorganization several other small Virginia cities went through around the same years.

Getting There

U.S. Routes 58, 360 and 501 are the county’s main highways, meeting at South Boston.
