The county covers 537 square miles, of which 528 square miles are land and 9 square miles are water.

Caroline County borders King George County to the north, Spotsylvania County to the northwest, Hanover County to the south, and King William County and King and Queen County to the east, with Essex County across the Rappahannock to the northeast.

Demographics

Caroline County had a population of 30,887 at the 2020 census, a density of about 58 people per square mile of land area. Bowling Green, the county seat, is the largest incorporated place at 1,168 residents; Lake Caroline and Lake Land’Or, both private lake-community CDPs, are the largest unincorporated concentrations of population. Virginia’s statewide median household income was the Virginia median of $89,931 (2023 ACS); Caroline County, a largely rural exurb, runs below that state figure.

Economy & Local Life

Agriculture and forestry remain part of the county’s economic base, alongside logistics and light industry drawn by Interstate 95 and the CSX rail corridor that run the length of the county. A growing share of residents commute north toward Fredericksburg and Stafford or south toward Richmond. Fort A.P. Hill, a large U.S. Army training installation, occupies a substantial block of the county’s northeastern land area and is a significant local employer and landholder.

History

Caroline County was formed in 1727 from parts of Essex, King and Queen, and King William counties, and was named for Caroline of Ansbach, queen consort to Britain’s King George II. Confederate general Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson died at Guinea Station in the county in May 1863, days after being wounded at Chancellorsville. In 1958, Richard and Mildred Loving of Central Point married out of state and were later prosecuted under Virginia’s anti-miscegenation law; their case, Loving v. Virginia, reached the U.S. Supreme Court and in 1967 struck down bans on interracial marriage nationwide. The champion racehorse Secretariat, winner of the 1973 Triple Crown, was foaled at The Meadow farm near Doswell.

Getting There

Interstate 95 crosses the county north–south, with US Routes 1, 17, and 301 providing local and regional connections.

Fredericksburg — about 20 miles north

Richmond — about 30 miles south

Ashland — about 15 miles south

Tappahannock — about 25 miles east

The nearest commercial airport is Richmond International Airport, south of the county via I-95.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is Caroline County, Virginia?
It is in the east-central part of Virginia, between Richmond and Fredericksburg along the Rappahannock River.

What is the population of Caroline County?
30,887 people, per the 2020 census.

How big is Caroline County?
537 square miles (1,390 km2), of which 528 square miles are land.

What is the county seat of Caroline County?
Bowling Green is the county seat.

How many towns are in Caroline County?
Two incorporated towns, Bowling Green and Port Royal, plus two census-designated places and well over a hundred named unincorporated communities.

What ZIP codes are in Caroline County?
Nine, led by 22427 (Bowling Green) and 22546 (Ruther Glen, the county’s most populous ZIP).

Where did Stonewall Jackson die?
At Guinea Station in Caroline County, in May 1863.

More counties in this state: Towns and villages in Virginia.

Caroline County is a county in Virginia, United States, in the east-central part of the state, between Richmond and Fredericksburg along the Rappahannock River.
