Albemarle County is a county in Virginia, United States, wrapped entirely around the independent city of Charlottesville in the Piedmont region below the Blue Ridge. It had a population of 112,395 at the 2020 census, an estimated 118,356 by 2025, and covers 726 square miles (1,880 km2), of which 721 square miles are land, centred near 38\u00b002\u2032N 78\u00b034\u2032W.<\/p>\n

Charlottesville is the county seat, though it is a legally separate independent city, not a part of the county it serves — Albemarle’s own government offices sit at 401 McIntire Road, Charlottesville, postal code is 22902. The county has no incorporated city of its own; Scottsville is its only incorporated town. Albemarle recognizes 11 census-designated places, has no civil townships (Virginia counties use magisterial districts instead — Albemarle has six: Jack Jouett, Rio, Rivanna, Samuel Miller, Scottsville and White Hall), and runs on Eastern time. Two entries straddle a county line and their Census figures cover both sides: Scottsville sits astride the Albemarle–Fluvanna line on the James River, and Afton sits astride the Albemarle–Nelson line near Rockfish Gap, so neither population count is Albemarle’s alone. The University of Virginia CDP covers the school’s grounds and adjoining neighborhoods outside the Charlottesville city line; it has no ZIP of its own because on-grounds addresses use Charlottesville’s own codes, chiefly 22903 and 22904.<\/p>\n
