Salt Lake County is a county in Utah, United States, filling the Salt Lake Valley between the Wasatch Range and the Oquirrh Mountains. It had a population of 1,185,238 at the 2020 census — the most populous county in Utah — an estimated 1,220,916 by 2025, and covers 807 square miles (2,090 km2) centred near 40\u00b040\u2032N 111\u00b055\u2032W.<\/p>\n

Salt Lake City is the county seat and the largest city, as well as the Utah capital; its postal code is 84101. The county holds 20 cities and 3 towns — 23 municipalities in all — plus a few unincorporated canyon communities, and it runs on Mountain Time. Its FIPS code is 49035.<\/p>\n

Salt Lake County has 23 municipalities: 20 cities and the 3 towns of Copperton, Brighton and Alta. Five of them — Kearns, Magna, White City, Emigration Canyon and Copperton — operated as metro townships from 2017 until 1 January 2025, when Utah converted every metro township into a regular city or town. Populations below are 2020 census counts, taken while that older status still applied to those five.<\/p>\n

Beyond the municipalities, the census recognises Granite, a CDP of 1,076 people on Sandy’s east bench, and the county administers a handful of unincorporated pockets: Mount Aire, Big Cottonwood Canyon, Parleys Canyon, the Sandy Hills and Willow Canyon enclaves inside Sandy, and the Southwest planning area beyond Herriman.<\/p>\n

Two boundary notes save confusion. Draper and Bluffdale both spill south across the county line into Utah County, so their citywide figures above include some Utah County residents. And White City, a compact grid entirely surrounded by Sandy, is a separate municipality — it fought annexation for decades and shares Sandy’s 84070 ZIP without being part of the city.<\/p>\n
