Carbon County is a county in Utah, United States, in the east-central part of the state, straddling U.S. Routes 6 and 191 in the Book Cliffs and Wasatch Plateau coal country. It had a population of 20,412 at the 2020 census and covers 1,485 square miles (3,850 km2), of which 1,478 square miles (3,830 km2) are land, centred near 39°38′N 110°35′W.<\/p>\n

East Carbon City itself was formed by the 1973 merger of two coal camps, Dragerton and Columbia, and later absorbed the nearby community of Sunnyside — so those three older names now describe neighborhoods inside the modern city rather than separate places. A wider ring of former mining camps sits abandoned or all but empty across the county’s coalfield: Bruin Point, Coal City, Consumers, Heiner, Hiawatha, Latuda, Martin, Peerless, Royal, Standardville, Storrs, Wattis, and Wildcat among them.
