Naomi Peak, in the county’s northeast corner, is the high point at 9,979 feet (3,042 m). The Bear River runs the length of the valley floor, feeding Cutler Reservoir near Mendon and Cache Junction before crossing into Box Elder County.<\/p>\n Cache County borders Rich County to the east, Weber County to the south and Box Elder County to the west, all in Utah. It also borders three Idaho counties: Franklin County to the north, Oneida County to the northwest and Bear Lake County to the northeast. None of the Idaho counties are covered on this site.<\/p>\n Demographics<\/h2>\nThe 2020 census recorded 133,154 residents. Logan (52,778) and Smithfield (13,571) are by far the largest communities, together holding about half the county’s population. Median household income was reported at $60,530 in the 2016–2020 American Community Survey, below the Utah median of $93,421 (2023 ACS), reflecting the county’s large student population at Utah State University and a workforce weighted toward agriculture, food processing and retail rather than higher-paying tech and finance jobs found along the Wasatch Front. Population density is roughly 114 people per square mile.<\/p>\n Economy & Local Life<\/h2>\nUtah State University in Logan is the county’s largest single employer and defines much of local life, from the Aggie Ice Cream plant it operates to the fall football and basketball seasons that fill the valley’s motels. Dairy processing is the other pillar of the local economy: Cache Valley has been Utah’s leading dairy-producing region for well over a century, and Gossner Foods and Schreiber Foods both run large cheese and milk-processing plants in Logan. Logan Regional Hospital anchors regional health care. Hay, grain and cattle operations remain the primary land use outside the incorporated cities.<\/p>\n History<\/h2>\nThe Utah Territorial Legislature created Cache County on January 5, 1856, and it was formally organized the following year. The county takes its name from the caches, or hidden stores, that trappers with the Rocky Mountain Fur Company dug in the valley to hide furs and supplies in the 1820s and 1830s. The first Mormon settlement in the valley was Maughan’s Fort, founded in 1856 and later renamed Wellsville. A rail line reached the county from Brigham City in 1873, opening the valley’s dairy and grain trade to outside markets. Utah State University traces its roots to the Agricultural College of Utah, founded in Logan in 1888.<\/p>\n Getting There<\/h2>\nUS Route 89 and US Route 91 are the county’s main highways, along with state routes 23, 30, 101, 142, 165, 200, 218 and 252 serving individual valley towns.
