The Guadalupe River, formed by its North and South forks near Hunt, runs southeast through the county past Ingram and Kerrville; the Guadalupe and its tributary creeks — including the Cypress and Turtle creeks — carved the flood-prone canyon country that made national news in July 2025 (see History). Terrain rises toward cedar- and oak-covered hills in the north and west.

Kerr County borders Kimble County to the north, Gillespie County to the northeast, Kendall County to the east, Bandera County to the south, Real County to the southwest, and Edwards County to the west.

Demographics

Kerr County had 52,598 residents at the 2020 census. Kerrville, the county seat, is by far the largest community at 24,928, followed by Ingram at 2,141. The county’s median household income runs below the Texas median of $75,780, reflecting its rural and retiree-heavy population. Population density is roughly 48 people per square mile.

Economy & Local Life

Kerrville anchors the county’s economy as a regional medical, retail and tourism hub for the Hill Country, home to Peterson Regional Medical Center and Schreiner University. Ranching (cattle, sheep and Angora goats), Hill Country tourism, river recreation and retirement communities are the county’s other economic mainstays. The Kerrville Folk Festival, an 18-day music festival held each May and June at Quiet Valley Ranch, is the county’s best-known annual event.

History

Kerr County was organized in 1856 and named by Joshua D. Brown, an early settler, for his fellow Kentuckian James Kerr, a soldier and congressman of the Republic of Texas. The county grew around shingle-making, ranching and, later, Hill Country tourism along the Guadalupe River. In the early hours of July 4, 2025, torrential rain sent the Guadalupe River rising more than 20 feet in under an hour along the river corridor near Hunt and Kerrville, a disaster that killed more than 100 people countywide, including children at a riverside summer camp, and remains the deadliest inland flood in recent Texas history.

Getting There

Interstate 10 crosses the northern part of the county; US Routes 83 and 87 and State Highways 16, 27, 39 and 173 serve Kerrville and the rest of the county.

San Antonio — 65 miles southeast

Fredericksburg — 25 miles northeast

Junction — 45 miles north

Bandera — 25 miles south

The nearest commercial airport is San Antonio International Airport; Kerrville Municipal Airport/Louis Schreiner Field handles general aviation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is Kerr County, Texas?
It is in the Texas Hill Country on the Edwards Plateau, about 65 miles northwest of San Antonio.

What is the population of Kerr County?
52,598 at the 2020 census.

How big is Kerr County?
1,107 square miles (2,868 km2), including 4 square miles of water.

What is the county seat of Kerr County?
Kerrville is the county seat.

How many towns are in Kerr County?
Two incorporated cities (Kerrville and Ingram), one census-designated place (Center Point) and several unincorporated communities.

What ZIP codes are in Kerr County?
78028 (Kerrville), 78025 (Ingram), 78010 (Center Point/Camp Verde), 78024 (Hunt/Waltonia) and 78058 (Mountain Home).

What happened in the 2025 Kerr County flood?
On July 4, 2025, flash flooding on the Guadalupe River killed more than 100 people in and around Kerr County, including campers at a riverside youth camp near Hunt.

More counties in this state: Towns and villages in Texas.

Kerr County is a county in Texas, United States, on the Edwards Plateau in the Texas Hill Country.
