Lake Tawakoni, on the county’s eastern
edge, drives a recreation and lakefront-housing economy around Quinlan, West Tawakoni and Hawk
Cove — West Tawakoni brands itself the “Catfish Capital of Texas.”

History

The Texas Legislature formed Hunt County on 11 April 1846, the same year Texas joined the
Union. It was named for Memucan Hunt, Jr., the first Republic of Texas minister to the United
States and later the Republic’s third secretary of the Navy. Greenville, founded the same year
and named for Thomas J. Green, a Texas Republic figure, became the county seat. Cotton built the
county’s early economy on the Blackland Prairie’s heavy soil, and Hunt County was once billed
as the “cotton capital of the world.” During the Civil War, the county was divided over
secession, with some residents fighting for the Union and others for the Confederacy. During
World War II, Majors Army Airfield near Greenville trained Mexican fighter pilots of the
Escuadrón 201, one of the few instances of foreign military training on US soil during the war.

Getting There

Interstate 30 crosses the county’s southwestern corner through Royse City and Caddo Mills,
linking the county to Dallas.
