Lake County is a county in South Dakota, United States, on the state’s eastern prairie roughly 31 miles northwest of Sioux Falls. It had a population of 11,059 at the 2020 census and covers 575 square miles (1,490 km2) of rolling, glacially-shaped farmland centred near 44°01′N 97°07′W.<\/p>\n

Madison is the county seat, and its postal code is 57042. The county holds one city, three incorporated towns, one village, and roughly a dozen unincorporated communities and lake settlements, several of them Hutterite colonies. Lake County sits in the Central time zone.<\/p>\n

Several of the county’s smaller entries are lakeshore subdivisions rather than towns: Lake Madison, Peninsula Park, Prairie Village, and Smiths Park are all cabin and cottage developments strung along the shore of Lake Madison itself, just east of the city that shares its name. Graceville Colony and Rustic Acres Colony are Hutterite communal farm colonies.<\/p>\n
