Dewey County is a county in South Dakota, United States, lying almost entirely within the Cheyenne River Indian Reservation in the north-central part of the state. It had a population of 5,239 at the 2020 census and covers 2,445 square miles (6,330 km2), of which 143 square miles is water, centred near 45°10′N 100°53′W.<\/p>\n

Timber Lake is the county seat; its postal code is 57656. The county holds two cities, one town, six census-designated places, and a scatter of unincorporated communities. Dewey County observes Mountain Time, one of the easternmost South Dakota counties to do so, and carries FIPS code 46041.<\/p>\n

North Eagle Butte is a separate census-designated place from Eagle Butte itself, on the opposite bank of the reservation road grid north of downtown, and the two are often described together as one community.
