Sumter County is a county in South Carolina, United States, about 45 miles east of Columbia. It had a population of 105,556 at the 2020 census, an estimated 105,067 by 2025, and covers 682.09 square miles (1,766.6 km2) centred near 33°55′N 80°23′W.<\/p>\n

Sumter is the county seat and its largest city; its postal code is 29150. The county holds 1 city, 2 incorporated towns and 14 census-designated places, plus a handful of smaller unincorporated communities, and it runs on Eastern Time. South Carolina has no civil townships, so none of its places are grouped that way.<\/p>\n

East Sumter and South Sumter are separate Census Bureau places bordering the city of Sumter, not neighborhoods inside its limits — their populations count toward the county total but not the city’s 43,463. Rembert is often confused with the Rembert Dam area on the Wateree River in neighboring Kershaw County; the CDP of that name sits well east of the river, near Shaw Air Force Base.<\/p>\n
