The Ashley River rises in the county’s eastern half and flows southeast toward Charleston Harbor, and the Edisto River forms part of the county’s southern edge. Pine flatwoods, wetlands and former rice and cotton land cover most of the county outside the Summerville-North Charleston suburban corridor.

Dorchester County borders Orangeburg County to the northwest, Berkeley County to the northeast, Charleston County to the southeast, Colleton County to the southwest, and Bamberg County to the west. Its two largest communities are the Dorchester County portions of North Charleston and Summerville, both of which extend into neighboring counties. As a fast-growing Charleston-suburb county, Dorchester has historically reported a median household income above the South Carolina median of $67,804, though a county-specific 2023 figure was not confirmed for this rewrite.

Economy & Local Life

Manufacturing is a leading sector, accounting for roughly 15.6% of county employment; Bosch runs a major automotive-electronics plant near Ridgeville, and the German material-handling firm KION Group also has a Dorchester County facility. Retail and grocery distribution employers include Food Lion, Harris Teeter and Walmart. The county’s economy is tied closely to the wider Charleston-North Charleston metropolitan area, and Summerville’s historic downtown, built around its 1830s “Town Out of the Woods” pine-forest layout, anchors much of the county’s retail and tourism activity.

History

Dorchester County was created on February 25, 1897, from parts of Colleton and Berkeley counties. It takes its name from Dorchester, Massachusetts, whose Congregationalist settlers founded the colonial town of Dorchester on the Ashley River in 1696; the ruins of that settlement, including a tabby fort and bell tower, are preserved today at Old Dorchester State Historic Site near Summerville. St. George was named the county seat when the county was organized.

Getting There

Interstate 26 runs through the county’s eastern half, linking Summerville and Ridgeville to Charleston and Columbia, and U.S. Route 78 crosses the county through St. George.

Summerville — about 25 miles southeast of St. George

North Charleston — about 35 miles southeast of St. George

Orangeburg — about 30 miles west of St. George

Columbia — about 70 miles northwest of St. George

Charleston International Airport, in North Charleston, is the county’s nearest commercial airport.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is Dorchester County, South Carolina?
It is in the state’s Lowcountry region, part of the Charleston metropolitan area, roughly 25 to 35 miles inland from Charleston Harbor.

What is the population of Dorchester County?
161,540 people at the 2020 census.

How big is Dorchester County?
571 square miles (1,479 km2), of which about 569 square miles are land.

What is the county seat of Dorchester County?
St. George is the county seat.

How many towns and cities are in Dorchester County?
Six incorporated municipalities lie fully or partly in the county — St. George, Summerville, North Charleston, Ridgeville, Harleyville and Reevesville — alongside well over a hundred unincorporated communities.

What ZIP codes are in Dorchester County?
Main ZIP codes include 29477 (St. George), 29483 and 29485 (Summerville), 29472 (Ridgeville), 29448 (Harleyville) and 29471 (Reevesville).

Does Dorchester County share any cities with other counties?
Yes.
