Waynesburg, the seat and largest community, and Carmichaels, the second-largest borough, anchor the county’s population. Median household income in the county runs well below the Pennsylvania median of $73,824, reflecting the decline of the deep coal-mining economy that once dominated the region.

Economy & Local Life

Coal mining and, more recently, Marcellus Shale natural gas extraction remain the backbone of Greene County’s economy. Waynesburg University, a private liberal-arts college founded in 1849, is one of the county’s largest employers alongside the State Correctional Institution – Greene, a maximum-security state prison near Waynesburg. Agriculture, mostly cattle and dairy farming on the county’s hillside pastures, continues in the townships away from the mining belt.

History

Greene County was formed on February 9, 1796, from part of Washington County, and is named for Revolutionary War general Nathanael Greene. Waynesburg, laid out soon after, is named for General Anthony Wayne. Before Pennsylvania and Virginia settled their western border, part of the county lay within the disputed District of West Augusta, claimed by Virginia. Coal mining shaped the county through the 20th century, and the Ryerson Station area still carries the scars and place names of that industry.

Getting There

Interstate 79 crosses the county’s northeast corner, and US Route 19 runs north–south through Waynesburg, linking the county to Washington, Pennsylvania, and Morgantown, West Virginia.

Washington, Pennsylvania — 25 miles north

Morgantown, West Virginia — 20 miles south

Uniontown, Pennsylvania — 20 miles east

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania — 55 miles north

The nearest commercial airport is Pittsburgh International Airport, roughly an hour’s drive north.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is Greene County?
It is in the southwest corner of Pennsylvania, along the border with West Virginia, part of the Pittsburgh media market.

What is the population of Greene County?
35,954 people, per the 2020 census.

How big is Greene County?
578 square miles (1,500 km2), including 2.0 square miles of water.

What is the Greene County seat?
Waynesburg is the county seat.

How many towns are in Greene County?
Six boroughs (Carmichaels, Clarksville, Greensboro, Jefferson, Rices Landing and Waynesburg), 14 census-designated places, and dozens of smaller unincorporated communities across 20 townships.

What ZIP codes are in Greene County?
Twenty-three, led by 15370 for Waynesburg; the full list is above.

What industries drive Greene County’s economy?
Coal and natural gas extraction, Waynesburg University, and the State Correctional Institution – Greene near Waynesburg.

More counties in this state: Towns and villages in Pennsylvania.

Greene County is a county in Pennsylvania, United States, in the southwest corner of the state along the West Virginia line.
