Fresno County is a county in California, United States, in the Central Valley about 110 miles north of Bakersfield and 130 miles south of Stockton. It had a population of 1,008,654 at the 2020 census, an estimated 1,035,456 by 2025, and covers 5,958 square miles (15,430 km2) of land centred near 36\u00b045\u2032N 119\u00b039\u2032W.<\/p>\n

Fresno is the county seat and by far its largest city; its postal code is 93721. The county holds 15 incorporated cities, one of them the seat, and more than 40 smaller unincorporated communities scattered across the valley floor and the Sierra Nevada foothills. California has no civil townships, so every place here answers directly to county government. The county runs on Pacific time; its FIPS code is 06019.<\/p>\n

Two name changes and mix-ups are worth flagging. Yokuts Valley carried the name Squaw Valley until 2022, when the county renamed it under a state law retiring that word from place names — older maps and some Census documents still show the old name. San Joaquin, the city (population 4,001), is not San Joaquin County, which sits roughly 150 miles north around Stockton, and it is not the San Joaquin River, which rises in the Sierra and crosses this county on its way north. And Kings County, California, Fresno’s southern neighbor, has no page on this site yet — searches for it often surface Kings County, New York (Brooklyn) instead.<\/p>\n
