Franklin County is a county in Ohio, United States, centred on the state capital, Columbus, in the central part of the state. It had a population of 1,323,807 at the 2020 census and covers 544 square miles (1,410 km2) centred near 39°58′N 83°00′W.<\/p>\n

Columbus is the county seat and its postal code is 43215. Franklin County is Ohio’s most populous county and includes 18 incorporated cities and villages plus a number of unincorporated communities and 16 civil townships. The whole county sits in the Eastern time zone; its FIPS code is 39049.<\/p>\n

Franklin County contains 14 cities, 4 villages, and a handful of unincorporated communities that predate Columbus’s twentieth-century annexations. Columbus’s population figure above is the city total across all four counties it spans (Franklin, Delaware, Fairfield, and Union); the vast majority of the city lies in Franklin County. New Rome, once a small village on U.S. 40 near Galloway, is not listed — Ohio dissolved its charter in 2004 after a state investigation into speed-trap policing, and the site was annexed into Columbus. Dozens of subdivision and homeowners’-association names from the old list — Alkire Lakes, Hoffman Farms, Winchester Highlands, and similar — are private developments inside Columbus or Hilliard rather than distinct settlements, and are omitted here; see notes.md.<\/p>\n

Franklin County’s townships have shrunk over a century of Columbus annexation; several, including Clinton and Franklin, are now mostly built-out city neighborhoods rather than open township land, and 2020 township-level population figures were not confirmed for this profile.<\/p>\n
