Two names on this list are easy to confuse with places elsewhere. Tryon, an unincorporated crossroads in southern Gaston County, has no connection to the well-known town of Tryon in Polk County, about 60 miles west. Mountain Island, the Catawba River community that gave Mountain Island Lake its name, is a separate place from the Mountain Island neighborhood inside Charlotte, across the county line in Mecklenburg. Two of the incorporated towns above are legally inactive: Spencer Mountain’s last two residents left after the 2010 census and its charter has been under state legislative suspension since 2016, and Dellview, down to six residents, has had no elected officials or municipal elections since 2000. Kings Mountain’s population figure is citywide — most of the city sits in Cleveland County, with only a small eastern edge reaching into Gaston.<\/p>\n
