It had a population of 1,004,457 at the 2020 census, an estimated 1,015,743 by 2025, and covers 430 square miles of land (1,114 km2) centred near 41°09′N 73°46′W.<\/p>\n

Three names cause real confusion. The City of Rye (16,592) is a fully independent municipality chartered in 1942; the separate Town of Rye (49,613), which surrounds it on two sides, contains the villages of Port Chester and Rye Brook plus the Rye Neck section of Mamaroneck — the city and the town share a name and a border but not a government. Ossining works the same way in miniature: the Village of Ossining (27,551, home to Sing Sing Correctional Facility) sits inside the larger Town of Ossining (40,061), which also holds part of Briarcliff Manor. And Harrison, Mount Kisco and Scarsdale are “coterminous” town-villages — each operates as a single hybrid government where the town and the village are legally the same place, unlike Rye or Ossining where the two levels are genuinely separate.<\/p>\n
