Rockland County is a county in New York, United States, on the west bank of the Hudson River about 25 miles north of Manhattan. It had a population of 338,329 at the 2020 census, an estimated 341,883 by 2024, and covers 173.55 square miles (449.5 km2) of land centred near 41\u00b009\u2032N 74\u00b002\u2032W.<\/p>\n
New City is the county seat; its postal code is 10956. The county holds 18 incorporated villages and 18 census-designated places across 5 towns, and it runs on Eastern Time. Its FIPS code is 36087. By land area it is the smallest county in New York outside the five boroughs of New York City.<\/p>\n
Rockland County has 36 places with their own 2020 census count: 18 incorporated villages and 18 census-designated places, spread across the towns of Clarkstown, Haverstraw, Orangetown, Ramapo and Stony Point. Every part of the county lies inside one of those five towns; villages sit within them, and a few straddle two. CDP stands for census-designated place — a named community with census boundaries but no government of its own. Rockland has no incorporated cities at all.<\/p>\n

Nyack, South Nyack, Upper Nyack, West Nyack and the hamlet of Central Nyack are five separate places; only the first three ever held village status. South Nyack voted to dissolve its village government and merged into the town of Orangetown on 31 March 2022, so it now appears as a CDP — its 2,699 figure is the last count taken while it was still a village. The village of Haverstraw, the separate village of West Haverstraw and the surrounding town of Haverstraw are three distinct units, and the Stony Point CDP covers only the built-up core of the wider town of Stony Point. Hamlets such as Garnerville, Central Nyack, Tallman, Palisades, Tomkins Cove, Jones Point and Rockland Lake have no census counts of their own.<\/p>\n The Five Towns<\/h2>\nNew York counties divide into towns rather than townships, and the town governments here do the work that townships or unincorporated county land would do elsewhere.
