Jefferson County is a county in New York, United States, on the shore of Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence River across from Ontario, Canada. It had a population of 116,721 at the 2020 census and covers 1,857 square miles (4,810 km2) — 1,269 square miles of land and 589 square miles of water — centred near 43°59′N 76°03′W.<\/p>\n

Watertown is the county seat, and its postal code is 13601. The county has one city, roughly 18 villages, 22 towns and dozens of smaller hamlets and communities, plus the Fort Drum census-designated place. It sits in the Eastern time zone, and its FIPS code is 36045.<\/p>\n

Carthage and West Carthage sit directly across the Black River from each other and are often treated as one built-up area, but they are separately incorporated villages in different towns. Wellesley Island and Thousand Island Park are both on the same St. Lawrence River island, split between a year-round hamlet and a historic seasonal community founded as a Methodist camp.<\/p>\n
