Two pairs on this list are easy to mix up. Washington Borough and Washington Township are separate municipalities that share only a border and a name — the borough was carved out of the township in 1868 and now sits as its own enclave near Hackettstown. Mansfield Township’s post office town, Port Murray, and Independence Township’s post office town, Great Meadows, both predate the modern township names and are still what mail carriers and most residents actually call those places.<\/p>\n
