Local government, the school district, and a handful of grain elevators and ranch-supply businesses in Hysham account for most non-agricultural employment. Treasure County High School in Hysham is the county&#8217;s only public high school and a center of community life, and the Yellowstone River corridor draws anglers and upland-bird and deer hunters each fall. The county fairgrounds in Hysham host the annual Treasure County Fair, the year&#8217;s biggest community gathering.<\/p>\n<h2>History<\/h2>\n<p>Treasure County was created in 1919 out of Rosebud County, taking its name from Montana&#8217;s nickname, the &#8220;treasure state.&#8221; Hysham was named for early rancher Charles Hysham and became the county seat at organization. Settlement followed the Northern Pacific Railway line along the Yellowstone River, and homestead-era farmers who arrived in the 1910s subdivided the bottomlands into small irrigated tracts. The county&#8217;s population peaked near 1,990 in 1920 and declined for most of the 20th century as homestead-era farms consolidated into larger operations, before edging up again between 2010 and 2020 &mdash; the first decade of growth in the county&#8217;s history.<\/p>\n<h2>Getting There<\/h2>\n<p>Interstate 94 runs the length of the county along the Yellowstone River, connecting Hysham directly to Billings and Forsyth.
