The Poplar River crosses the county from northwest to southeast, and the international line with Saskatchewan forms the entire northern boundary. Montana Highway 5 and Montana Highway 13 are the county’s main roads. Daniels County borders Sheridan County to the east, Roosevelt County to the south, and Valley County to the west, with Saskatchewan, Canada, along its entire northern edge.

Demographics

Daniels County had 1,661 residents at the 2020 census, a continued decline from a peak of 5,553 in 1930. Scobey is by far the largest community, home to roughly four in five county residents; Flaxville is the second-largest place. Population density is about 1.2 people per square mile. Census Bureau estimates put county household income below the Montana median of $70,804, typical of the state’s sparsely populated wheat counties.

Economy & Local Life

Cattle ranching and dryland wheat farming have been the county’s economic base since settlement, and grain elevators still dominate Scobey’s skyline. Scobey High School is the only K-12 school serving the county. The Daniels County Museum and Pioneer Town in Scobey, a collection of relocated historic buildings, is the area’s best-known local attraction and hosts the annual Daniels County Fair.

History

Daniels County was organized in 1920 out of parts of Sheridan and Valley counties, one of several Montana counties carved up during the state’s early-20th-century homestead boom. It is named for Mansfield Daniels, a local rancher. Scobey was chosen as the county seat and grew as a Great Northern Railway grain-shipping point, a role the town’s elevators still serve today.

Getting There

Montana Highway 5 runs east-west through Scobey, connecting to Highway 13 running north-south through the county.

Plentywood, Montana — about 45 miles east

Glasgow, Montana — about 60 miles south

Wolf Point, Montana — about 65 miles south

The nearest commercial airport is Wokal Field/Glasgow International Airport in Valley County, with Essential Air Service flights to Billings.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is Daniels County?
It is in far northeastern Montana, on the border with Saskatchewan, Canada.

What is the population of Daniels County?
1,661 people, per the 2020 census.

How big is Daniels County?
1,426 square miles (3,690 km2), almost all of it land.

What is the Daniels County seat?
Scobey is the county seat.

How many towns are in Daniels County?
Nine named places: one city, one town, two CDPs and five unincorporated communities.

What ZIP codes are in Daniels County?
59263 (Scobey), 59222 (Flaxville), 59253 (Peerless) and 59276 (Whitetail).

What river runs through Daniels County?
The Poplar River crosses the county from northwest to southeast.

More counties in this state: Towns and villages in Montana.

Daniels County is a county in Montana, United States, on the Canadian border abutting Saskatchewan.
