Custer County is a county in Montana, United States, on the Yellowstone River in the southeastern part of the state. It had a population of 11,867 at the 2020 census and covers 3,793 square miles (9,820 km2), of which 3,783 square miles is land and 9.9 square miles is water, centred near 46°16′N 105°35′W.<\/p>\n

Miles City is the county seat, and its postal code is 59301. The county has one incorporated city, one incorporated town, and about a dozen unincorporated communities. There are no civil townships in Montana — land outside the incorporated places is governed directly by the county. Custer County is in the Mountain time zone.<\/p>\n

Most of these unincorporated places are little more than a rail siding, a rural school, or a scatter of ranch buildings along the Milwaukee Road or Northern Pacific rights-of-way — Mizpah, Sheffield, and Volborg in particular grew up as grain-shipping points and have since shrunk to a handful of residents. Kinsey, on the Yellowstone east of Miles City, and Volborg, on the Powder River in the county’s rugged southeast corner, are the two best-known outlying communities.<\/p>\n
