It was named for Felix Grundy, a U.S. Attorney General and Tennessee senator who had died the previous year. Trenton was platted as the county seat soon after organization and grew as a rail and market town serving the surrounding farm country through the 19th and 20th centuries; the arrival of the railroad in the mid-1800s cemented Trenton&#8217;s role as the county&#8217;s commercial hub over smaller rival settlements.
