Sunflower County is a county in Mississippi, United States, in the heart of the Mississippi Delta. It had a population of 25,971 at the 2020 census and covers 698 square miles (1,807 km2) of land, centred near 33°36′N 90°36′W.<\/p>\n
Indianola is the county seat, and its postal code is 38751. The county has four incorporated cities, three incorporated towns, and a scatter of smaller unincorporated communities. Mississippi has no civil townships. Sunflower County sits in the Central time zone.<\/p>\n
Sunflower County has seven incorporated places and roughly two dozen smaller crossroads and former plantation communities. Indianola is the seat and largest city; Drew, Moorhead and Ruleville are also incorporated cities, and Doddsville, Inverness and Sunflower are incorporated towns. The rest of the list below are unincorporated communities, several of them former Delta plantation settlements or rail sidings that never organised as towns.<\/p>\n

The Sunflower River, for which the county is named, winds through it, along with Big Sunflower and Little Sunflower tributaries and numerous oxbow lakes and bayous left behind by the shifting Mississippi River. Farmland — cotton, soybeans, corn and catfish ponds — covers most of the county outside its towns. The county seat, Indianola, sits about 30 miles east of the Mississippi River and roughly 100 miles north of Jackson and 100 miles south of Memphis, Tennessee.<\/p>\n |
