Hennepin County is a county in Minnesota, United States, anchored by Minneapolis, the state’s largest city, on the Mississippi River about 10 miles west of St. Paul. It had a population of 1,281,565 at the 2020 census, an estimated 1,284,784 more recently, and covers 606.7 square miles (1,571 km2) centred near 45\u00b000\u2032N 93\u00b029\u2032W.<\/p>\n

Minneapolis is the county seat; its postal code is 55415, though the city itself spans dozens of ZIP codes. The county holds 45 incorporated cities and no unincorporated townships — Hassan Township, the last one, was annexed into the city of Rogers starting in 2012 — and it runs on Central Time. Its FIPS code is 27053.<\/p>\n

All 45 of Hennepin County’s municipalities are cities under Minnesota law; the county has no active townships and no unincorporated CDPs. Forty of them lie entirely inside the county line. Five more cities straddle the county line, so their citywide population figures above would overstate what actually sits in Hennepin: Chanhassen (25,947 citywide) is mostly in Carver County; Dayton (7,262) and Hanover (3,548) are mostly in Wright County, as is most of Rockford (4,500); and St. Anthony (9,257) is split with Ramsey County, which holds its larger share. None of the five is counted in the ranked table above. There is also Fort Snelling, a small unorganized territory at the confluence of the Mississippi and Minnesota rivers, administered directly by the state rather than as a city.<\/p>\n
