Chippewa County is a county in Michigan, United States, occupying the eastern end of the Upper Peninsula along the Canadian border. It had a population of 36,785 at the 2020 census and covers 2,698 square miles (6,990 km2), of which 1,558 square miles (4,040 km2) is land and 1,140 square miles is water, centred near 46°19′N 84°31′W.<\/p>\n

Sault Ste. Marie is the county seat and its postal code is 49783. The county has 2 incorporated municipalities (a city and a village), around a dozen recognized census-designated places, and dozens of smaller unincorporated communities spread across 15 civil townships and one charter township.
