Hampden County is a county in Massachusetts, United States, in the Pioneer Valley about 90 miles west of Boston. It had a population of 465,825 at the 2020 census, an estimated 462,815 by 2024, and covers 634 square miles (1,642 km2) centred near 42\u00b008\u2032N 72\u00b038\u2032W.<\/p>\n

Springfield is the county seat and the county’s largest city; its postal code is 01103. Massachusetts abolished county government in 1998, so Hampden County has no county council or executive today — only a sheriff’s department and a registry of deeds remain countywide. The county holds 7 cities and 16 towns, all incorporated; there is no unincorporated territory anywhere in Massachusetts. It runs on Eastern Time. Its FIPS code is 25013.<\/p>\n

Palmer is the one municipality here that reads like several places at once. It was incorporated as a city in 1938 but never built a single downtown — it governs four historic villages instead: Depot Village (the administrative center, 01069), Bondsville (01009), Thorndike (01079) and Three Rivers (01080), each with its own ZIP and its own identity. Locals name the village, not “Palmer,” when giving directions.<\/p>\n
