The land is flat to gently rolling farmland cut by tidal creeks, with a shoreline the county puts at roughly 209 miles when every inlet is counted. Eastern Neck Island, at the county’s southern tip, holds the Eastern Neck National Wildlife Refuge.

The county borders Cecil County to the north, New Castle County, Delaware to the northeast, Kent County, Delaware to the southeast, and Queen Anne’s County to the south across the Chester River.

Demographics

Kent County had 19,198 residents at the 2020 census, the fewest of any Maryland county. Chestertown and Rock Hall are its two largest incorporated towns. The county’s median household income runs below the Maryland median of $98,678, reflecting its farming and fishing base rather than the Baltimore–Washington commuter economy found in most of the state. Population density works out to roughly 69 people per square mile of land.

Economy & Local Life

Agriculture — grain, poultry and produce — and the Chesapeake Bay seafood industry (crabs and oysters) remain core to the county’s economy, alongside tourism built around its sailing harbors and 18th-century downtown. Washington College, founded in Chestertown in 1782 and often cited as the oldest college chartered in Maryland, is the county’s largest non-farm employer and anchors the town’s arts and cultural life.

History

Kent County traces its organisation to 1642, when Maryland’s governor and council appointed commissioners for the “Isle and County of Kent,” making it the oldest county in the state. It takes its name from the English county of Kent. Chestertown, laid out on the Chester River in the early 18th century, grew into a busy Colonial-era port; a 1774 tea party there, echoing Boston’s, is still marked locally each May.

Getting There

Maryland Route 213 runs north–south through Chestertown and Galena, linking the county to US 301 near Millington and to the Delaware state line. Rock Hall, on the bay, is reached via Route 20.

Chestertown — 45 miles east of Baltimore

Rock Hall — 8 miles west of Chestertown

Galena — 12 miles northeast of Chestertown

Millington — 15 miles east of Chestertown

The nearest commercial airport is Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI), about an hour’s drive west across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is Kent County, Maryland?
It is on Maryland’s Upper Eastern Shore, between the Chesapeake Bay and the Delaware state line, north of Queen Anne’s County.

What is the population of Kent County?
19,198 at the 2020 census — the smallest population of any county in Maryland.

How big is Kent County?
413 square miles (1,070 km2) total, of which 277 square miles are land.

What is the county seat of Kent County?
Chestertown.

How many towns are in Kent County?
Five incorporated towns — Chestertown, Betterton, Galena, Rock Hall and Millington — plus more than a hundred unincorporated communities.

What ZIP codes are in Kent County?
Nine, headed by 21620 (Chestertown), 21661 (Rock Hall), 21635 (Galena), 21610 (Betterton) and 21651 (Millington).

Is Kent County the oldest county in Maryland?
Yes.
