\ncovers 835 square miles (2,160 km2) of land centred near 43\u00b049\u2032N 70\u00b020\u2032W — making it Maine’s
\nmost populous county by a wide margin.<\/p>\n

Three of these towns are recent secessions from a larger neighbor, and it explains a few odd
\nborders. Chebeague Island split from Cumberland in 2007 after 184 years as part of that town, over
\na dispute about school funding. Long Island broke away from Portland in 1993 in a fight over
\nproperty taxes. Frye Island, a seasonal community entirely on an island in Sebago Lake, was part
\nof Standish until it incorporated on its own in 1998.<\/p>\n
