The Ohio forms the county’s entire northern boundary, and Kinniconick Creek, one of the state’s few remaining largely undeveloped streams, runs south to north through the eastern half of the county before reaching the river. Salt Lick Creek drains the western side.

Lewis County borders Adams County, Ohio to the north, Scioto County, Ohio, to the northeast, Greenup County to the east, Carter County to the southeast, Rowan County to the south, Fleming County to the southwest, and Mason County to the west, all across the Ohio River or overland ridgelines.

Demographics

Lewis County had 13,080 residents at the 2020 census, spread across 483 square miles of land for a density of about 27 people per square mile — one of the more sparsely populated counties in northeastern Kentucky. Vanceburg and Garrison are the county’s two largest population centers. Median household income in the county runs well below the Kentucky median of $61,118, consistent with the rural, historically timber-dependent economy of the surrounding hill counties.

Economy & Local Life

Health care and social assistance is the county’s largest employment sector, followed by construction and manufacturing. Lumbering and the timber trade shaped Lewis County’s economy for generations, drawing on the heavily forested hills that still supply quality oak, and small sawmills and logging operations remain part of the local economy today. Farming along the river bottoms and creek valleys supplements timber and manufacturing work. Lewis County is the home county of U.S. Representative Thomas Massie.

History

Lewis County was formed in 1806 from part of Mason County and named for Meriwether Lewis, of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, who was serving as governor of the Louisiana Territory at the time. Vanceburg, on the Ohio River, was laid out as the county seat soon after. The county is politically one of the most consistently Republican in Kentucky; the last Democrat to carry it in a presidential election was Samuel J. Tilden in 1876. Vanceburg is also home to what is described as the only non-cemetery Union monument south of the Mason-Dixon Line raised by public subscription, a marker of the county’s Civil War-era loyalties along the Ohio River border.

Getting There

KY 8 follows the Ohio River through the length of the county, linking Vanceburg with Garrison and Concord, while US 62 and the AA Highway (KY 9) run along the county’s southern edge toward Maysville and the Cincinnati area.

Maysville, Ky. — about 20 miles west

Portsmouth, Ohio — about 25 miles northeast, across the Ohio River

Ashland, Ky. — about 45 miles east

Lexington, Ky. — about 95 miles south

The nearest commercial airport is Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport (CVG), roughly 90 miles to the northwest.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is Lewis County, Kentucky?
It is in northeastern Kentucky along the Ohio River, bordering Ohio to the north and east.

What is the population of Lewis County?
Lewis County had a population of 13,080 at the 2020 census.

How big is Lewis County?
The county covers 495 square miles (1,280 km2), including 13 square miles of water.

What is the county seat of Lewis County?
Vanceburg is the county seat.

How many towns are in Lewis County?
The county has two incorporated cities (Vanceburg and Concord), one census-designated place (Garrison), and roughly three dozen smaller unincorporated communities.

What ZIP codes are in Lewis County?
The main ZIP codes are 41179 (Vanceburg), 41141 (Garrison), 41189 (Tollesboro), 41166 (Quincy), and 41135 (Emerson).

What river forms Lewis County’s northern border?
The Ohio River runs along the entire northern edge of the county, separating it from Adams and Scioto counties in Ohio.

More counties in this state: Towns and villages in Kentucky.

Lewis County is a county in Kentucky, United States, in the northeastern part of the state along the Ohio River.
