Land accounts for 400 square miles (1,000 km2) of the total; the remaining 3.3 square miles (8.5 km2) is water, mostly Rice Lake and the Winnebago River, which crosses the county from northwest to southeast. Rice Lake, near Lake Mills in the county’s northeast corner, is protected within Rice Lake State Park and is a stopover for migrating waterfowl.

Faribault County, Minnesota, borders the county to the north, and Freeborn County, Minnesota, borders it to the northeast, across the state line. Worth County lies to the east, Hancock County to the south, and Kossuth County to the west.

Demographics

Winnebago County had 10,679 residents at the 2020 census, a density of about 27 people per square mile. Forest City and Lake Mills are the two largest communities, together holding roughly two-thirds of the county’s population. Median household income in the county runs below the Iowa median of $71,433, typical of a small rural county with an aging population.

Economy & Local Life

Winnebago Industries, a major recreational-vehicle manufacturer founded in Forest City in 1958, is the county’s largest employer and defines its economy alongside row-crop agriculture (corn and soybeans) on the surrounding till-plain farmland. Waldorf University, a small private college founded by Norwegian Lutheran settlers in 1903, is also based in Forest City. Lake Mills retains a strong Norwegian heritage of its own and serves the farm trade of the county’s eastern half.

History

Winnebago County was organized in 1847 and named for the Winnebago (Ho-Chunk) Native American tribe, which was not native to the area but was relocated through northern Iowa by federal policy in the 1840s and 1850s. Norwegian immigrants settled much of the county from the 1860s onward, and Trinity Lutheran Church, built in 1874, is among the oldest standing structures in the county.

Getting There

U.S. Route 69 runs north–south through the county and Iowa Highway 9 runs east–west, crossing at Forest City; Interstate 35 passes just east of the county and is reached via Highway 9.

Mason City, Iowa — 25 miles southeast

Albert Lea, Minnesota — 20 miles north

Algona, Iowa — 30 miles west

Forest City Municipal Airport handles general aviation; the nearest commercial airport is Mason City Municipal Airport.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is Winnebago County, Iowa?
It is in north-central Iowa on the Minnesota border, about 25 miles northwest of Mason City.

What is the population of Winnebago County?
10,679 people, per the 2020 census.

How big is Winnebago County?
402 square miles (1,040 km2), of which 400 square miles is land.

What is the county seat of Winnebago County?
Forest City is the county seat.

How many towns are in Winnebago County?
Seven incorporated cities and two unincorporated communities.

What ZIP codes are in Winnebago County?
50436, 50450, 50424, 50478, 50453, 50465 and 50473.

What company is headquartered in Winnebago County?
Winnebago Industries, the RV maker, was founded in and is headquartered in Forest City.

More counties in this state: Towns and villages in Iowa.

Winnebago County is a county in Iowa, United States, on the Minnesota border in the north-central part of the state.
