Ottumwa is the county seat. The county was made on February 17, 1843, and was named after a Meskwaki chief named Wapello.<\/p>\n

The Ottumwa, IA Micropolitan Statistical Area has Wapello County as a part of it.<\/p>\n

The county has a total area of 436 square miles (1,130 km2), of which 432 square miles (1,120 km2) are land and 4.2 square miles (11 km2) (1%) are water, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.<\/p>\n
