Monroe County is a county in Iowa, United States, in the south-central part of the state. It had a population of 7,577 at the 2020 census and covers 434 square miles (1,120 km2) centred near 41°01′42″N 92°52′12″W.<\/p>\n

Albia is the county seat and its postal code is 52531. The county has four incorporated cities and a further roughly twenty smaller communities and former settlements, most tracing back to its coal-mining era. Monroe County runs on Central time and carries the state FIPS code 19137.<\/p>\n

Monroe County’s map holds four incorporated cities — Albia, Eddyville, Lovilia and Melrose — plus a long list of unincorporated communities and coal-camp sites that grew up around the county’s early-1900s mines. Several of the smaller names below (Bucknell, Consol, Foster, Hagerty, Hiteman, Maxon, Rexfield, Selection, Ward and Weller among them) were company coal camps that shrank or emptied out once the mines closed; a few no longer have any residents at all. Buxton, once the largest majority-Black community in Iowa, is now a ghost town with no standing structures.
