Appanoose County is a county in Iowa, United States, on the Missouri border in the south-central part of the state. It had a population of 12,317 at the 2020 census and covers 516 square miles (1,340 km2), of which 497 square miles (1,290 km2) are land, centred near 40\u00b044\u203217\u2033N 92\u00b052\u203202\u2033W.<\/p>\n

Centerville is the county seat, and its postal code is 52544. The county has around a dozen incorporated cities plus several unincorporated communities and no townless area. Appanoose County lies in the Central time zone (UTC−6, UTC−5 during daylight saving), and its FIPS code is 04.<\/p>\n

The county’s largest incorporated city is Centerville, the seat, followed by five smaller cities scattered across the county’s 17 civil townships. A cluster of former mining camps and rail sidings around the Rathbun Reservoir survive only as place names today.<\/p>\n
