Ripley County is a county in Indiana, United States, in the state’s southeastern corner near the Ohio River hill country. It had a population of 28,995 at the 2020 census and covers 448.06 square miles (1,160.5 km2), of which 446.43 square miles (1,156.2 km2) is land, centred near 39°06′N 85°16′W.<\/p>\n

Versailles is the county seat and its postal code is 47042. The county has one city, six towns and more than two dozen unincorporated communities, organized into 11 civil townships, and it keeps Eastern time.<\/p>\n

Towns & Villages in Ripley County<\/h2>\n

Ripley County’s largest municipality, Batesville, straddles the Ripley–Franklin county line, so only part of its population lives on the Ripley side. Everywhere else is unincorporated — small crossroads communities that never took shape as towns. Milan and Old Milan are two different places — Old Milan is a small unincorporated crossroads a short distance from the incorporated town of Milan, not a former name for it. Batesville’s 7,202-person 2020 count is the whole city’s population across both Ripley and Franklin counties; only part of that population and area sits on the Ripley County side.<\/p>\n
