The eastern half is rolling prairie farmland; the western half, across the river, holds the smaller share of the county’s towns, including Lacon. The Woodford State Fish and Wildlife Area and stretches of river bottomland give the county some of the larger wooded and wetland tracts in this part of the state.

Marshall County borders Putnam County to the north, LaSalle County to the northeast, Woodford County to the south, Peoria County to the southwest, Stark County to the west, and Bureau County to the northwest.

Demographics

Marshall County had 11,742 residents at the 2020 census. Henry is the county’s largest city; Lacon is the county seat. Median household income in the county runs below the Illinois median of $80,306, consistent with its rural, farm-dependent economy. Population density is about 30 people per square mile, among the lower densities in the region.

Economy & Local Life

Agriculture, principally corn and soybeans, is the base of Marshall County’s economy, supported by grain elevators and farm-service businesses in Henry, Lacon and Toluca. Illinois Valley Community College serves county residents from neighboring LaSalle County, and Marshall-Putnam Special Education Cooperative and the county’s public school districts are among the larger local employers. The Marshall County Fair, held each summer in Lacon, is the county’s largest annual event.

History

Marshall County was organized on January 19, 1839, out of Putnam County. It is named for John Marshall, Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court, who died in 1835. Lacon, on the Illinois River, was platted as the county seat the same year and grew as a river-trade town before railroads reshaped the county’s commerce toward Henry and Toluca later in the 19th century.

Getting There

Interstate 39 crosses the eastern edge of the county, and U.S. Route 51 and Illinois Routes 17, 18, 26, 29, 40, 89, 117 and 251 connect its towns.

Peoria — 25 miles southwest

Ottawa — 30 miles northeast

Bloomington — 45 miles southeast

La Salle-Peru — 25 miles north

The nearest commercial airport is General Wayne A.
