Macon County is a county in Illinois, United States, centred on the city of Decatur along the Sangamon River in the central part of the state. It had a population of 103,998 at the 2020 census and covers 586 square miles (1,520 km2), of which 581 square miles (1,500 km2) is land and 5.2 square miles (13 km2) is water, centred near 39°52′N 88°58′W.<\/p>\n

Decatur is the county seat, and its postal code is 62521. Macon County has three cities, nine villages, two census-designated places and 16 active civil townships. The county sits in the Central time zone and carries FIPS code 17115.<\/p>\n

Macon County contains roughly 30 named places, from the county-seat city of Decatur down to small rural crossroads that never incorporated.
