Jackson County is a county in Illinois, United States, in the region locals call “Little Egypt” because of its position near the confluence of the Mississippi and Ohio rivers. It had a population of 52,974 at the 2020 census and covers 584 square miles (1,510 km2) of land plus 18 square miles (47 km2) of water, centred near 37°47′N 89°23′W.<\/p>\n

Murphysboro is the county seat, its postal code is 62966, though Carbondale — home to the main campus of Southern Illinois University — is the county’s largest city.
