Raymondville is the county seat.
The county was established in 1911 and incorporated the following year.
Willacy County is part of the Raymondville micropolitan statistical area, which is part of the broader Brownsville-Harlingen-Raymondville combined statistical area, which is part of the Rio Grande Valley region.
The county has a total area of 784 square miles (2,030 km2), of which 194 square miles (500 km2) (25%) are covered by water.[4] The county is bounded by the Gulf of Mexico.
