Wicomico County is located on the Delmarva Peninsula in the southeastern part of the U.S. state of Maryland.
As of the census in 2020, there were 103,588 people living there.
Salisbury is the county seat.
The county was named after the Wicomico River, which got its name from the Algonquian words wicko mekee, which mean “a place where houses are built.”
This seems to refer to a Native American town on the riverbanks. The county is part of the Metropolitan Statistical Area of Salisbury, MD-DE.
The U.S. Census Bureau says that the county is 400 square miles (1,000 km2) in size, with 374 square miles (970 km2) of land and 26 square miles (67 km2) of water, or 6.4%.
