The Indiana General Assembly authorized Whitley County on February 7, 1835, as part of an omnibus bill that created thirteen new counties at once; the county was formally organized in 1838. It was named for Col. William Whitley, a Kentucky frontiersman and militia officer killed at the Battle of the Thames in October 1813 during the War of 1812. Columbia City was platted as the county seat in the 1830s and grew as a rail and market town; Churubusco, in the county’s north, later became locally famous for “Oscar,” a giant snapping turtle reportedly sighted in nearby Fulk Lake in the 1940s and 1950s, an event still marked by the town’s annual Turtle Days festival.
