As of the 2020 census, there are 18,477 people living there.[1] Montross is the county seat.
The county has a total area of 253 square miles (660 km2), of which 229 square miles (590 km2) are land and 24 square miles (62 km2) (9.3%) are water, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
The county is in the Northern Neck George Washington Birthplace AVA winemaking region. It is on the Northern Neck.
