Edwards County was split into Wayne County in 1819.
It is named after General “Mad Anthony” Wayne, who was an officer in both the Revolutionary War and the Northwest Indian War.
The county has a total area of 715 square miles (1,850 km2), of which 714 square miles (1,850 km2) are land and 1.7 square miles (4.4 km2) (0.2%) are water, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
