St. George is the county seat and the major city.

The county was established in 1852 and incorporated in 1856.

It was named after George Washington, the first President of the United States.

The Paiute Indian Reservation is located in western Washington County.

Washington County is part of the St. George, UT Combined Statistical Area.

Signal Peak in the Pine Valley Mountains is the county’s highest peak, rising 10,369 feet (3,160 metres) above sea level.

The county covers 2,430 square miles (6,300 km2), of which 2,426 square miles (6,280 km2) is land and 3.6 square miles (9.3 km2) (0.1%) is water.
